Meet Katy and her baby Sidney
“You’re giving your baby goodness – and it’s free!”
Katy is a proud mum of two from Coulby Newham and is passionate about helping other mams feel confident and supported on their breastfeeding journey.
“I was open-minded and not sure at first, but when I started, it felt natural and like it was meant to be. It’s convenient and, of course, it’s entirely free, which helps. Also, you know you are giving pure goodness to your baby.”
Katy’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She faced early difficulties when baby Sidney was diagnosed with tongue-tie, a condition that can make breastfeeding painful and difficult.
Katy was determined to keep going and with the right support she has been able to breastfeed Sidney. She credits the infant feeding team and breastfeeding clinics in playing a vital role in her journey. “Even when you struggle, there’s light at the end of the tunnel – you’ll get there!”
“Remember why you wanted to do it in the first place and remember how natural it is. Be confident and utilise all the support you can.”
Katy felt conscious about breastfeeding in public at first, “I’ve become much more confident about breastfeeding outdoors. At first, I used social media to find places that were especially welcoming to breastfeeding mums. That made a big difference.”
“It’s been a brilliant way to bond. Both my boys are real mummy’s boys!” she laughs.
Katy also felt supported by her partner, Richard, “When I get up and find he’s had a drink made for me, just there, it can be a godsend. Little things like that can make a big difference.”
After becoming a Mamazing Breastfeeding Ambassador, Katy has become increasingly passionate about helping other mothers feel confident. She also talks about the challenges of feeding a toddler.
“I became involved with the Mamazing campaign last year after my second son, Sidney, was born and I’ve found myself advocating breastfeeding to other women. I stopped breastfeeding Jonah after a year but with Sidney, who has been harder, I’ve kept going, he’s 15 months now. It’s different because Sidney can ask to be fed now. It’s a different relationship from a baby. But it’s incredibly bonding in a way that is just as intense as with a newborn.”
There are many venues in Middlesbrough which welcome breastfeeding.
