Meet Erin and her toddler Arnie

Erin has found breastfeeding Arnie a joyful and natural part of everyday life. But she admits her breastfeeding journey hasn’t been easy.

“The first seven weeks were horrendous. It seemed natural to breastfeed, but we had serious latching issues. I had many sleepless nights. It was exhausting.”

Despite the challenges, Erin was determined to keep going. “My partner helped in so many ways, but he couldn’t ‘half breastfeed’. In the end, it is you that has to do that! But my husband, Aaron, has also changed and adapted. At first, he was at a loss, but now he gets up and calms Arnie brilliantly.”

Support from professionals at her local Family Hub made a huge difference. “It is a skill – a skill that you and your baby have to learn. Someone has to teach you. When I understood that, a lot more clicked into place.”

Working and juggling family life, Erin originally thought she would stop breastfeeding much earlier. But continuing to feed naturally has brought unexpected benefits.

“It’s like a miracle cure. If he’s hurt himself, it’s like it takes the pain. If he can’t sleep, it makes him drop off. It’s like nothing can’t be put right by the boob!”

“Just be kind to yourself,” she said. “You expect it to be that phrase, ‘the most natural thing in the world.’ But sometimes nature needs a little help. If you can do it, it’s absolutely worth it. The amount of joy it brings is incredible.”

Breastfeeding has also deepened Erin’s bond with Arnie in ways she never expected. “You have to relax, take time, and when you’re doing it, you’re with your child, seeing little things through your little one’s eyes. I see dinosaur toys through his eyes now… and I never knew I could love dinosaurs so much! It’s bonding.”
