Meet Katy and her baby Sidney
“You’re giving your baby goodness – and it’s free!”
Katy is a proud mum of two from Coulby Newham and is passionate about helping other mams feel confident and supported on their breastfeeding journey.
“I was open-minded and not sure at first, but when I started, it felt natural and like it was meant to be. It’s convenient and, of course, it’s entirely free, which helps. Also, you know you are giving pure goodness to your baby.”
Katy’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She faced early difficulties when baby Sidney was diagnosed with tongue-tie, a condition that can make breastfeeding painful and difficult.
Katy was determined to keep going and with the right support she has been able to breastfeed Sidney. She credits the infant feeding team and breastfeeding clinics in playing a vital role in her journey. “Even when you struggle, there’s light at the end of the tunnel – you’ll get there!”
“Remember why you wanted to do it in the first place and remember how natural it is. Be confident and utilise all the support you can.”
Katy felt conscious about breastfeeding in public at first, “I’ve become much more confident about breastfeeding outdoors. At first, I used social media to find places that were especially welcoming to breastfeeding mums. That made a big difference.”
“It’s been a brilliant way to bond. Both my boys are real mummy’s boys!” she laughs.
Katie also felt supported by her partner, Richard, “When I get up and find he’s had a drink made for me, just there, it can be a godsend. Little things like that can make a big difference.”
As a Mamazing Breastfeeding Ambassador, Katy is determined to help other mams feel empowered and informed, just as she was.
“I’m proud to be part of something that helps other mums feel confident and supported. Breastfeeding isn’t always easy, but with the right help, it can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.”
There are many venues in Middlesbrough which welcome breastfeeding.
