Meet Lorna and her baby Ryan
If you are a new mam and finding it a challenge to breastfeed you are not alone. Lorna had some pain when she started breastfeeding. “The first weeks I struggled. I stopped for a week before trying again. You think, ‘what am I doing wrong? Is baby OK? You get so anxious. I wanted him to have all the nutrients I could provide – but your body knows you’ve just given birth.
Lorna was determined to try again and got support from health visitors, Family Hubs staff, breastfeeding groups and family, including her sister-in-law. And, first and foremost, her partner and Ryan’s dad, Yassir.
Yassir, said the supportive role is crucial, “Yes, it’s 90% mum and obviously only she can breastfeed…but there’s still a big role for us dads. It’s to give your partner a break. A break from baby, a chance to have a bath, to sleep while YOU look after your little one for a while. You get to bond with baby in that time and that’s the best thing that ever happens to you.”
Lorna’s top tip
Take your time and relax. “Just take it easy. Your body will get used it. Your baby needs time too. And get any help you can.”
