The Borrow a Book scheme which encourages families to become Middlesbrough library members and to loan and return library books is going from strength to strength.

The initiative runs as part of Amazing Babies – these sessions show parents how they can support and promote their baby’s learning and development.

Last year 298 babies joined the library and 492 books were borrowed.

Local mum Sam, who attended the Amazing Babies group at Hemlington Family Hub has praised the scheme:

“I wouldn’t have considered getting my son a library card until I attended the sessions.

“Borrowing books has encouraged myself and other family members to read with him, he actively listens and engages with the pictures and the words.”

Middlesbrough Libraries’ Community Hub Officer Michelle Mockler said: “The Borrow a Book scheme perfectly complements our library service and acts as a first port of call for families with babies.

“Once parents join, we can then encourage them to engage with the many events and activities on offer at the library including weekly rhyme time sessions which helps to develop a lifelong habit of reading.”

The Borrow a Book scheme is just one way which the Family Hubs can support early literacy development. Find out more here.

Parents will be invited to the Amazing Babies sessions following their new birth visit. If you would like to find out more, contact your local Family Hub on 01642 579120
