A telephone helpline which connects local parents to speech and language experts at our Family Hubs has provided much-need reassurance to those who have concerns about their children’s language development.

The service is suitable for families of children aged five and under, where professionals can offer advice and signpost to suitable resources and videos to use at home.

Speech and Language Therapist Iona Capstick (pictured) said: “It is so important parents and carers feel empowered to support their child’s communication skills.

“They are the best tool to help them, and the earlier they can do this the better. I hope the advice line supports families on this journey.”

Last year, this virtual service helped 43 Middlesbrough families, with 15 more parents already receiving support in 2025 so far.

If you have a concern about your child’s communication skills, please contact your local Family Hub on 01642 579120 and ask to speak with the Speech and Language Therapist.
