Two Council services have joined together to support a mum and her young son’s speech and language journey.
Delivered through Middlesbrough Council’s Family Hubs service, the Let’s Talk programme provides parents with practical ideas and tips to help develop young children’s communication skills.
Rebeca, who is originally from Romania took part in the programme when she became concerned about her toddler, David’s speech.
Facing a language barrier, Rebecca was supported by Sabina – a volunteer with 50 Futures; the council’s work experience scheme.
Working alongside Early Years Support Worker Jo, Sabrina translated key messages to Rebeca, encouraging her to try the activities so she could develop David’s speech and language at home.
Rebeca said: “I want to thank the Let’s Talk programme for the support and care, these sessions have helped us both so much.
“My son couldn’t previously talk and didn’t understanding what I was asking him – with your support, I realised I had to help him.
“David has started speaking after attending these sessions, he understands me a lot more now.
“I have also benefited from these sessions too and realised the importance of communication and the difference I can make playing, singing and talking with him.”
Early Years Support Worker Jo said: “Rebeca grew in confidence every week, especially from the encouragement that Sabina was able to give her. This support was invaluable to ensure mum got the best outcome from the programme”.
Parents of two-year-olds who meet the criteria can take part in the Let’s Talk programme. For further help and support, contact your local Family Hub on 01642 579120.
