Play is a big part of childhood but knowing how to make the most of playtime isn't always easy.
Seven young dads from Middlesbrough have been building their confidence and learning new ways to connect with their children through Playful Parenting workshops at Thorntree Family Hub.
The workshops help parents understand how play supports children's learning, development and growing brains. They also explore how simple household items can be turned into fun play opportunities, proving that quality play doesn't have to cost a lot.
As well as learning practical tips and ideas, the dads were encouraged to think about their own experiences of play as children and how these memories influence the way they parent today.
One dad, Dylan, 22, who has a two-year-old daughter called Mabel, said: "The best part was learning new ways to play using everyday items and understanding the importance of play being led by the child."
The workshops have already had a positive impact on family life. Three of the dads said they had reduced their children's screen time, replacing devices with creative activities they could enjoy together.
Davie, 21, (pictured) a single dad to three-year-old Katie, shared how the sessions had helped him when his daughter was upset or not listening. He learned how changing the environment and using play as a distraction could help settle difficult situations, and said the approach has made a real difference for his family.
Other dads said the play resources they were given to use at home were a huge hit with their children and had encouraged them to spend even more time playing together.
Most importantly, every dad who attended said they would recommend the workshops to other parents.
By giving parents practical ideas, support and confidence, the Playful Parenting workshops are helping families create more opportunities to learn, have fun and build stronger relationships through play.
The sessions are delivered to parents by friendly and engaging Family Hub staff and were designed to fit around the demands of busy family life.
